Awareness, Access & Equity

Throughout the planning process for the SCORP, the issue of equity has been raised as integral to the overall vision for outdoor recreation in New Mexico. Awareness of outdoor recreation assets and the ability to access them are two closely related issues. A section of the Plan will be dedicated to exploring the current context for outdoor recreation equity in the state, as well as the barriers and opportunities that either complicate or provide paths that we may follow to achieve equity goals. Below are working definitions for these terms:

Outdoor Recreation | Physical and passive activities that take place in a natural setting (urban and rural) and benefit the body, mind and/or spirit.

Awareness | Understanding where outdoor recreation assets, programs and offerings occur and how you can access them

Access | The ability to reach and enjoy the benefits of outdoor recreation assets without barriers or undue cost

Equity | *The guarantee of fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups

*UC Berkeley Initiative for Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity

A group of stakeholders met to discuss these issues on May 25, 2021. A recording of the presentation and discussion, along with meeting notes, can be found below:
